Cleo by Tilly and the Buttons (graded for a closer fit)
This is Hannah, the middle daughter, when asked what she would like for her birthday, she showed us pictures of some High St. dresses " Can you make me one of these ?"
The pics were of a pinafore dress and we immediately thought of Tilly and the Buttons Cleo Pinafore Dress. As she works with children she wanted a closer fit through the top to avoid any entanglements.
Took her measurements and according to the pattern she was 2 sizes, one at the hips and smaller for the waist and bust so first we graded between the two from the waist to hips, creating a smooth line that can be streamlined at the first fit where necessary.
After stroking her way through the fabrics settled on this Viscose Blend in Grey Plaid, It is beautifully soft and has a slight stretch for comfort (3%).
PLAN; cut out graded pattern then Baste together and gradually adjust the side seams at the waist for the fitted look without distorting the top part.
We spent a lovely Sunday afternoon in the Sewing studio Hannah passing pins and getting involved with pressing etc, fitting as we went along. We took another 15mm (approx another size) off the waist grading the seam to the hip as that fitted perfectly. Altered the facing by this same amount. An invisible zip at the ready to insert on one side seam if getting in and out was going to be a problem but that wasn't needed. I continued after she left to go home added the pocket and hemmed. When she pops back next week we will put on the buttons.
VERDICT ON PATTERN.
An easy to follow pattern, even with the alterations, lovely topstitching detail for a professional look. possibility of different combinations with pockets to make your own.
And here it is all finished....
Sewing for someone you love is so rewarding especially at their request, and TOGETHER.
ONE OF LIFES PRECIOUS MOMENTS
